High Commissioner in Winnipeg

Winnipeg, November 7-8, 2006 - Members of the Ghanaian Union of Manitoba had the pleasure of meeting the High Commissioner of Ghana her Excellency Dr. Margaret Amoakohene, when she arrived in Winnipeg as part of a nation-wide tour - visiting various Ghanaian communities. Her Excellency was accompanied by her deputy Mr. Yaw Osei.

Their visit included among others, meetings with the Deputy Premier of Manitoba, Manitoba Industry and Trade officials, Wardrop, Executives of the African Communities of Manitoba and the Ghanaian Community in Winnipeg.

 

Agriculture Institute of Canada Honours Dr. Anane

Winnipeg, November 7, 2006 - Dr. Kwame Oppong-Anane received recognition at the Agricultural Institute of Canada (AIC) Honours and Awards Ceremony held in Winnipeg. Dr. Oppong-Anane was presented with the AIC International Partners Award in recognition of his work in Ghana to successfully develop and transfer appropriate technology to improve the welfare of women in rural communities in Northern Ghana, and to train and encourage resource poor farmers to take up livestock rearing for poverty alleviation and income generation.

Under his leadership as the Ghanaian Coordinator of the Canadian Society of Animal Science-Ghanaian Society of Animal Production Partnership Project, Dr. Oppong-Anane's approach to agricultural development has resulted in empowered women's groups within their communities, increased income of women as well as improved health of households. The positive environmental approaches of the project have resulted in a significant reduction of bush fires in the area and an increase in biomass for livestock grazing. Dr. Oppong-Anane lives in Accra, Ghana.

The ceremony was attended by the Deputy High Commissioner to Canada his Excellency Yaw Osei and a delegation from the Ghanaian Community in Manitoba.


Community Members honoured in Toronto

Toronto, September 2, 2006 - The Fames Furlane Banquet Hall on 7065 Islington Avenue in Woodbridge, Toronto, was the venue for the 6th. Annual Ghanaian Canadian Achievement Awards. Hundreds of enthusiastic Ghanaian community members and well-wishers from across Canada gathered on September 2nd. at the said venue to recognize 32 outstanding achievers in their communities. The function was organised by the Ghanaian News newspaper through the hard working editor and publisher Mr. Emmanuel Ayiku.

Among them were 3 from the Ghanaian Union of Manitoba -

  • Dr. Doris Kyeremateng - National Honour

  • Mr. Charles Kankam - Community Service Award

  • Mr. Stephen Tackie -  Community Service Award

Dignitaries from the Ghana High Commission in Ottawa and  representatives from municipal, provincial and federal levels including community leaders, cultural groups, church members and the general public were in attendance for the occasion. It was a great night for the recipients from Manitoba as they made the Ghanaian Union of Manitoba proud.

We would like to congratulate them and also wish them the very best in their endeavours.
 

Ghana High Commission Delegation in Winnipeg

Winnipeg, June 15, 2006 - A delegation from the Ghana High Commission in Ottawa was in Winnipeg to attend the AfricaFest Event organised by the African Communities of Manitoba (ACOMI). The delegation was made up of Ms. Susan Hagan Annobil, Acting Ghana High Commissioner and Mrs. Theresia Phillips, Confidential Secretary. They were met at the airport by members of the Ghanaian Community and Dr. Kennedy Mange'ra, President of ACOMI.

Farewell Party for Hon. Odoi-Sykes in Toronto

Toronto, May 13, 2006 - A farewell party was organised by the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) for the outgoing Ghana High Commissioner to Canada Hon. Odoi-Sykes. The function was held at the Days Inn Hotel on Wilson Ave in Toronto. The Ghanaian Union of Manitoba (GUM) was represented by the Vice-President Frank Indome. At the function, Frank presented Hon. Odoi-Sykes with a present (a picture book of Manitoba) on behalf of the Ghanaian Community in Manitoba. The High Commissioner was impressed with the gesture from the Ghanaians in Manitoba. He leaves Ottawa for Accra at the end of the month.

The Deputy High Commissioner, Mr. Charles Agyei-Amoama, who studied and lived in Winnipeg for over 10 years was also presented with a similar gift on behalf of Ghanaians in Manitoba. Mr. Amoama has been posted to Italy. A new high commissioner will be in Ottawa next month.

Prof. Sefa Dei Visits Winnipeg

Winnipeg, April 27, 2006 - Professor George Sefa Dei, of the University of Toronto and immediate past President of the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario visited Winnipeg this week as the keynote speaker of a conference on racism. His presence in Winnipeg gave the Executive of the Ghanaian Union of Manitoba Inc (GUM) the opportunity to have a chat with him at the Victoria Inn where the conference took place.

Discussions centered around more co-operation between the two organizations and how best to learn from each other with specific reference to the Ghanaian communities in Canada. Frank Indome, Vice President, and Maggie Yeboah, Secretary, represented GUM.
