Membership
to the Ghanaian Union of Manitoba is in two categories:
-
Full Membership is
open to all Ghanaians living in Manitoba.
-
Associate membership
may be granted to non-Ghanaians upon the
recommendation of the Executive committee on condition that such
membership will not be detrimental to Union goals.

Definitions:
-
Ghana
refers to the independent sovereign country on the west coast of Africa
-
Ghanaian
means a citizen of Ghana
-
Citizen of
Ghana, for the purpose of the organization means
-
a person born in
Ghana (and lived in Ghana for 10 years or more) or
-
a person born of
Ghanaian parent(s) or
-
a person who has
legally acquired Ghanaian citizenship or
-
the spouse of a
Ghanaian
Rights and Privileges
Members
shall be eligible to stand for an executive office,
serve on committees and enjoy all other rights and privileges of
membership.
Executive Office
To be
eligible to become an executive member of the Union, a person must be:

a member of the
Ghanaian Union of Manitoba
-
18 years of age
-
be eligible to vote
for elections
-
be in good standing
with the Union (i.e. neither suspended nor
disciplined by the Union nor be convicted of an indictable offence
-
be willing to uphold
the terms of the Union's constitution
Obligations
Members are expected to:
-
Pay their annual
dues (dues are paid each year from January to December
- currently $60.00 a year if paid in full by 15 July, or $75.00
if paid after 15 July)

Attend the general meetings
of the Union
-
Participate in the
Union's activities and attend its calendar year events.

Volunteer when
needed to support the Union.
Benefits
Members enjoy a variety
of benefits including but not limited to:

A forum to meet as a
group to participate, share and contribute to the
educational and socio-economic developments of Ghanaians in Manitoba

Create an
environment for our young ones to interact and learn from each other
-
Create an
environment that allow us to help each other, promote our
common interests and pursue activities of mutual interest and benefit

Be well informed
about events in Ghana and by keeping touch with the Ghana High
Commission

Create an
environment that allows us to pass on and/or teach each other
(including our young ones) the diverse cultures in Ghana
Constitution
The constitution of the
Ghanaian Union of Manitoba written when the organization was formed in
1982 was revised and amended on 23rd. November 2008. The updated
constitution was ratified on 18th. January 2009 at a general meeting
held in Winnipeg. Do find below the current constitution of the

Ghana Union NewsGroup
Members
are encouraged to join the Ghanaian Union of Manitoba
Newsgroup which is an electronic forum that discusses and shares
information/issues related to Ghanaians in Manitoba. You need a valid
email address to join this Newsgroup. The Newsgroup is also used by the
Executive to disseminate information to all members.
The Newsgroup is on Yahoo
Groups and its called GhanaUnionMB. To
become a member of the newsgroup, send a message with a valid email
address to the Webmaster.
